grayscale on cfax?

Hi, I am trying to decide what lcd to use,

I am wondering if the cfax series can be driven faster than they are capable of displaying in order to achieve grayscale. I am told that I would have problems with flicker If I had two framebuffers since I can't sync with the lcd.

I would show one of them 1/3 the time the other 2/3 the time to get up to 4 grays.. more framebufferes needed for more grays.

Has this been done?

The short answer is no. The speed that the controller updates the LCD from the frame buffer is not fast enough that you could use it to average two frames. You would get the flicker.
