Fun with an HD44780 chip

G'day!

I have a little project on my mind. I was thinking to make a led-sign controlled by an HD44780 chip. Now i need to know a little about the HD44780's function and so on.

I need to know:

Can the HD44780 supply enough juice to drive the leds (even high efficiency ones that only need 1mA)?

Do the com or seg-pins represent ground? (if any)

Are all the pixels lit at the same time or does the chip scan them really fast?

Is VLC the same voltage that goes to the pixels?

Is the matrix of leds best constructed by putting all the anodes (or cathodes) in the horizontal top row of pixels together and lead to the corresponding com-pin and likewise with the seg-pins?
