Finding a compatible LCD replacement for my synthesizer

The LCD on my Access Virus Indigo 2 synthesizer is hard to see. I'd like to replace it with something better.

A post here (http://www.infekted.org/virus/showthread.php?p=302070) shows someone replacing the LCD with this one (http://www.newark.com/everbouquet/mc16021e8-sblw/lcd-module-alphanumeric-16x2/dp/97K4628?Ntt=MC16021E8-SBLW).

However I'd like to get a replacement from CrystalFontz with the same physical specs.

CrystalFontz.com clearly states their LCDs are HD44780 compatible, however this LCD (http://www.newark.com/everbouquet/mc16021e8-sblw/lcd-module-alphanumeric-16x2/dp/97K4628?Ntt=MC16021E8-SBLW) mentions nothing of the sort. The specs do refer to a 16COM / 40SEG controller. Does that mean its completely different to the HD44780 LCDs here?

Am I to assume if HD44780 isn't mentioned in the specs the its not compatible with the standard?

Are all 16x2 LCDs compatible with one another, or are there competing controller standards?

The controller on the display from Newark is an HD44780 compatible display - we have a few displays with this controller.

Interesting -- the image on the Newark site, and the drawing in the datasheet don't match :)

The datasheet matches with our CFAH1602A family:

Our CFAH160B-TMI-JT looks to be a closer match to the image:

If you check the measurements of the display from the Indigo - we can help narrow down which one to get.

They linked to the controller spec - The Sunplus SPLC780D is HD44780 compatible. We have several modules in-house with that controller so we are familiar with it. Most of our standard character modules have the Sitronix ST7066U, which is also HD44780 compatible.

this has the exact physical specs as the one described in the datasheet at the newark site.

I'm having trouble searching crystalfontz.com for more color variations other than green or orange.
I love the orange, it would work nicely but I can't buy them individually.

Does this particular form size have a name or other description other than 84.00mm wide?

Yes, the image on the newark site is different. I think its there for "illustrative" purposes.
