connecting PLED module

The PolyLED modules should be (logically) HD44780 compatible. But what voltage levels should be placed on the power pins ? Is the brightness adjustable ?

The board labels the pins as:
1 GND (usual)
2 DVR (??)
3 BTV (??)
(the rest is standard HD44780)

DVR is just Vdd = 5v
BTV is the brightness voltage, higher voltage => brighter display

BTV should be 2-3 volts typical:

BVT = 2.5v => 20 nits (typical)
BVT = 3.0v => 45 nits (typical)

Lower brightness will yield longer life.
