bgmicro lcd help

I bought the 2x40 LCDs for bgmicro.com and can not get it to work correctly. the backlight comes on and nothing else. I am sure I wired it right because I went over it servial times. I have pin 3 ground, the contrast pin, and also the other pins where they belong. the thing is I do not know if it is the hardware or software. how do i test either one. I am using win 2k and downloaded the file for port access. I saw something on the screen eirlier today for a min, and went away and never saw it again. I can not figure it out any help please!
