SPI problem on 632 v2.1

I'm trying to use SPI mode on the 632 display using a motorola microprocessor (HCS12). I have everything set up to what I believe is correct and it works perfectly in background debug mode (a feature offered by motorola on some chips that allows some debugging without needing an emulator). However, if I start the code from power up (I know that it's running) the display never responds. Is there something that I'm missing, perhaps related to power up? I've tried adding delays and I do frequently set the SPI parameters. Thanks.
