linux problem with 8U232AM on cfa633

I'm running kernel 2.4.25 on a debian system. The kernel seems to see and initialize the ftdi usb serial device ok:

ftdi_sio.c: v1.3.5:USB FTDI Serial Converters Driver

usbserial.c: FTDI 8U232AM Compatible converter detected
usbserial.c: FTDI 8U232AM Compatible converter now attached to ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 for devfs)

And for the most part I can talk to the device OK. But sooner or later, the ftdi device will spontaneously disconnect itself. Usually, it reconnects after a few seconds, but not always. When this happens, I need to power off the machine to get it back.

Although the problem eventually shows up under normal usage, I can cause this to happen within a few minutes every time with a program that does nothing but issue ping commands as fast as it can. It waits for the command response and never issues a command before getting a response.

The machine is Pentium 4 with an Intel 875P/ICH5 chipset.
