631 and linux

I am trying to set up the 631 on a linux box running 2.4.(21, 28 I have tried both). I have tried the test633 but it only seems to print the first line of text, and the clear option only clears the 1st line. In the looping version of test633, the first line is readable, but the 2nd line is scrambled. I am not sure if this is normal or not. When I try the clear option on the looping test633, it only clears the first line.

test633 gives error below and only clears first line of LCD:

test633 /dev/usb/ttyUSB0 115200 clear

Usage:
test633 PORT BAUD
PORT is something like "/dev/ttyS0" or "/dev/usb/ttyUSB0"
BAUD is 19200 or 115200
To clear the display, enter "clear" as an optional third parameter

"/dev/usb/ttyUSB0" opened at "115200" baud.

SendByte() failed
SendByte() failed
SendByte() failed
Ctrl-C to exit.
Updated display, now waiting for packets

Display Cleared.
Done.
