I have wired up my parallel lcd according to http://www.icehw.net/article.asp?id=104 . When everything was done I pluged in the screen. After a min or so the screen started getting very hot. I have read in other posts that I need a resistor to make this function properly. Is this true? What kind of resistor would I need for this LCD? What would I need to do to get this lcd working correctly?

Also I tested out the software for a bit and the only thing that seems to show up on the lcd are the text lines that can be displayed in each line (found at the top of the configure screen). None of the other functions are coming up on the display correctly, just a bunch of garbage. Im pretty sure I have it wired right or the text wouldnt display correctly right? Thanks for the help!

We do not recommend the parallel modules (such as the one you are interested in) for end-user PC applications. These modules require more extensive wiring knowledge and the proper tools. These modules are primarily intended for OEM (manufacturer) use, and as such, we do not carry any cables, brackets, or serial adapters for these modules.

We do not offer end-user tech support on the CFAH* series LCDs in PC applications. We will not accept returns on CFAH* LCDs damaged in an attempt to connect them to a PC.

The serial modules and kits (634, 633, 632 models and kits: http://www.crystalfontz.com/products/select_kit.html) are best suited for PC applications.

That said, good wiring guides for HD44780 compatible LCD's can be found:

You can also go to http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?threadid=5582 and search for "assuming alphanumeric" and you will find a short Q/A post on parallel displays.

Why are the guides different? Some wiring scrematics have them wired up directly to the power source while others use the resistors and pots? I followed the guide at ice hardware and my screen gets hot. Is this guide wrong?

You want resistors and pots, keeps the heat down, as well as prolongs the life of your display's backlight. The guides are different 'cause different people made them up, some better than others. ;)
